When I was 19 years old, I came across a book by Mineo MIKAMI, a leading pioneer in the hair styling field in Japan, entitled “Yumenoaru Amikomi(Wonderful Braiding)”. It was my first encounter with hair braiding. The inspiration I felt at this time is the underlying basis for what I want to do with my life.

For about 13 years from then, I learned hair braiding through self-study and developed braided hairstyles by trial and error between intervals of my beauty salon work. I had Teruki GOTO, a photographer, to shoot photos of them, and he willingly consented. Thanks to his help, I could hold a private exhibition of my works with photographs in 2003 and 2004. Many people in various business communities came to see the exhibitions. To my surprise, Minako HIRASAWA, a chief editor of the weekly publication “Shukan Biyou”, brought Mineo MIKAMI to the exhibition gallery, and introduced me to her. I was deeply moved by first meeting with MIKAMI, and was very glad to talk with her about hair braiding. Her words gave me a new determination to expand the braid world as art through various expressions. My book that has just been published was the first compilation of my works.

For preparing publication of this book, I purely concentrated on hair braiding (from basic design to arranged design and art design that I feel beautiful based on my aesthetic sense I have fostered) separated from an actual human body, and I focused the beauty of braid .

In Japan, there is a very wonderful culture of tying such as tying with a two-tone paper cord, braiding cords, etc. I think that hair braiding has spiritual commonalities with this Japanese tying culture.

I will maintain enthusiasm for my hair styling job, while devoting effort to enhance my skill with the courage of my convictions and to devote effort do work hard consistently with feelings a sense of deep gratitude and pure motivation while learning from history, familiarizing myself with various arts, and loving beauty.
